How can you tell the difference between water weight and fat weight?

Ginnie asked:

I am 35 weeks pregnant and so far I have gained 32 pounds. I have been retaining a lot of water off and on during my whole pregnancy. My arms feel soft like marshmellows. Is this fat or water weight? I have never been overweight in my entire life. I don’t really know what a fat arm feels like. I don’t have any swelling in my joints but I notice it in my arms and my legs and my hands and feet.

i would say it is water. most of your fat weight that you gain is the baby and the placenta and all that other good stuff.

You’re pregnant. Of course you’re going to gain weight, and you’re going to have to work it all off when you’re done giving birth. The weight you gain is both water weight and fat weight. It’s completely normal during pregnancy. But, don’t worry about this right now. Take it easy, and most importantly, make sure that you are properly taking care of your baby. Congratulations!

beign pregnant and at 35 weeks, you could be experiencing some of the normal symptoms of swelling. If you take your socks off and there is a rim, it’s most likely that you are retaining water. Limit your salt intake and drink more water and that should help. Remember, water follows salt, so the more salt in your diet, the more swollen you will be. It’s just circulation and the higher demand on your heart from the pregnancy. If your next appt with the doc shows high blood pressure, it would definitely explain the big difference you are noticing in your arms, hands, legs and feet. Everyone has it to some degree, but if it seems to be a lot, make sure you get it checked at the doctor’s office.
