What is a cheap but good quality home gym?
Zack asked:
My family and I want to get a satisfying gym for at home. I am a thin teen who wants to be toned and muscular without having to pay big $$ for a home gym. I am not able to work out infront of large mirrors and others, so I’ve decided to ask my parents for a personal gym. Is there anything that is below $2000 that works just as good as this AXT2 I saw at a hotel?

Seriously, a good home gym is expensive and probably inferior to a decent setup with a full circuit of machines and free weights. I’m going to assume you don’t have access to a spotter. I would avoid gimmicky devices like “Bowflex” like the plague; they are expensive and don’t give high quality resistance. Instead, if you buy one device, make it a Smith Machine. That may be about $500-$700. Get a sturdy one. You can do bench presses, squats (be careful!) and rows without a spotter. Then I would get a set of adjustable 30-40 lb dumbells. You can use less weight on these for “fly” movements, but can do lunges, rows, arm exercises… You can get pretty muscular with a routine like this, and it should be less that $2K and certainly less than a health club membership. Who needs wall climbing, anyway? (You may want to add some jogging for cardio. Or swimming.)

Almost all home gyms suck. They turn into great clothes racks, however.
Your best bet is free weights. Get an olympic size bench.. something sturdy. (if it’s flimsy, you eventually won’t use it) and an olympic bar and weight set. Get those dial-a-weight dumbells to save on space. Total cost for all of this – well under a grand and you’ll be more likely to use it. Good luck and remember to up your protein intake, and start supplementing vitamin B and creatine monohydrate (in moderation, of course).

the best home gym consists of an adjustable bench with a leg attatchment, some extra weight plates and a cambered bar for doing curls. stay away from those super expensive home gym machines. They are inferior to barbells and you won’t build as much muscle or become as fit. Also, the machines limit the number of exercises you can do even though they are more expensive than barbells. Barbells and dumbells are way cheaper and you can do a crap-load more exercieses on them. I reccommend the following products:
