Slim down – remove fat
Bones are in the middle of your thigh, with the muscles wrapped around them. Any fat you have is on the outside, so it can HIDE big, strong muscles and make you THINK that you’re fatter than you are.
A lot of ‘fat’ people have very strong legs, because they are doing HEAVY leg exercises (moving their bodyweight around) every time they stand or walk. Working with heavy weights will ‘bulk up’ the muscles that are being used.
If you strengthen your leg muscles with LONG sessions of fairly LIGHT work, the muscle tissue will become more dense, and take up less space.
Doing a lot of flexibility exercises, or sports like long-distance swimming or climbing (things that make you ‘reach out’ a lot) will also reorganise your muscles to allow them to become longer and thinner.
Callanetics is an exercise system designed to strengthen and increase the density of ‘deep’ parts of the large muscles such as thighs and buttocks.
Fat is ONLY burned by the kind of muscle fibres (’slow-twitch’)that produce GENTLE movements. Keeping your body active all the time, with very gentle movements, can maximise your use of fat as muscle-fuel. Over time, this will slowly remove fat stored around your body.
(Powerful movements use ‘fast-twitch’ muscle fibres, and just burn extra sugar. That makes you tired and hungry, so you’ll need to stop, rest and eat.)
Your body stores fat preferentially in bodyparts that are not moved about much. When muscles are active a lot of the time, the heat they produce, together with chemicals they release into the bloodstream, will cause more fat to be released from storage nearby.
This means that you can influence the location of your fat loss, by choosing which bodyparts you want to move most.
(The idea that you cannot ’spot-reduce’ fat IS A MYTH, based on the mistaken belief that dieting only causes fat loss.)
If you keep your legs moving, and try to increase the ‘range of motion’ that they are used to (by taking up yoga or a martial art, doing different swimming strokes, etc), you will cause fat to be removed, as well as changing the muscle tissue locally.
Fat loss is a very long, slow process (months and years), but you can detect changes in your musculature within weeks.
