How can I use the gym effiently on my own?

I go to the gym everyday for about a month and i have seen minimal results. This is what I do while Im there: I run for about 30 minutes and then i do as many crunches as possible about 50 more or less, then i work on my arms or legs but I see that my arms are turning into muscle, not toned or getting smaller. Maybe I should diet? Well does anyone know th ebest way to use the gym efficently? And the best diet to go with it?
